HARP.gov is a Federal Government Website for the Home Affordable Refinance Program. HARP was created by the Federal Housing Finance Agency specifically to help homeowners who are current on their mortgage payments, but have little to no equity in their homes, refinance their mortgage – that is, they owe as much or more than their homes are currently worth – are eligible for a HARP refinance.

The CFPB has a tools section on their website to help protect consumers.

Avoid Scams

Know the warning signs to protect yourself, your money, and your home.

Tips to avoid scams:

  1. Beware of anyone who asks you to pay a fee in exchange for counseling services. Real help is free.
  2. Beware of people who pressure you to sign papers immediately, or who try to convince you that they can “save” your home if you sign or transfer over the deed to your house.
  3. Do not sign over the deed of your property to any organization or individual unless you are working directly with your mortgage company to forgive your debt.
  4. Never make a mortgage payment to anyone other than your mortgage company without their approval
